15 wonderful LEGO® sets to build as a family

Looking for fun activities to do as a family during the holidays? Why not tackle a family LEGO build? The only trouble is deciding what to build!

To make it easier for you, we’ve chosen 15 sets we think would make great builds for the whole family…

1. LEGO Classic Large Creative Brick Box (10698)

With an amazing array of pieces and base plates—and in 33 different colours—this set is a brilliant place to begin. We like the Large Creative Brick Box because it allows the family to get creative and build their own designs. But of course it’s still possible to build all the models pictured simultaneously! So you really have the best of both worlds.

2. LEGO Architecture

If you’re building with the older kids in the family, this is a great theme to offer interesting historical facts and open conversations around what’s going on in the world. And since we probably won’t be planning international trips with the kids for some time still, LEGO Architecture is also a great way to “armchair travel”.

3. LEGO Art

LEGO Art might have positioned itself for an older audience, but really, when it comes down to it, the kids can most certainly join in creating these clever artworks too. It also comes with a soundtrack with a wealth of information around the subject of the set, be it Marilyn Monroe and Andy Warhol, The Beatles or Marvel Studios Iron Man or Star Wars.

4. LEGO DUPLO: Modular Playhouse (10929)

We love this set for the whole family because it can include even the youngest in the build and the play too. It’s a great opportunity to teach toddlers about everyday functions as well as play make-believe with older kids. There’s mom, dad and child figures, plus a pet dog and a teddy bear – all designed to inspire a comforting emotional attachment in toddlers. Filled with familiar details and infinite fun, you’ll share endless precious developmental moments as you explore play possibilities together. For even more fun, you can rebuild the same pieces as a tower house, and then again as a residential house!

5. LEGO DOTS: Creative Picture Frames (41914)

For the family big on arts and craft, LEGO DOTS is a gold mine of possibilities! We suggest starting on designing your own picture frame patterns. Once you start, you’ll be itching to create more brilliant pieces. Make bracelets, a jewellery box or even a pencil box. Get extra dots to let your creative ideas have free rein.

6. LEGO Technic: Rally Car (42077)

Families with older kids will enjoy building this rally car featuring sporty blue, white, red and black bodywork with racing stickers, large rear spoiler, 4 spot lamps and 6-spoke red rims with low-profile tires. This advanced building set also features a detailed cockpit with racing seats and roll cage, 2-fan engine cooling system, opening hood and rear hatch, and a V6 engine with moving pistons. Rebuild the Rally Car to create a Buggy for a double build and play experience.

7. LEGO Creator Expert: Ford Mustang (10265)

And while we’re on to cars, we think the Ford Mustang is just a really iconic car and a great build too for the more advanced builders in the family. This one’s been developed with input from Ford too, so the details are pretty authentic. It features dark-blue bodywork with white racing stripes, bonnet scoop, printed Mustang grille badge, GT emblems and 5-spoke rims with road-gripping tires. And it comes with optional add-ons for customization, including a selection of license plates, supercharger, rear ducktail spoiler, beefy exhaust pipes, front chin spoiler and a nitrous oxide tank. You can even adjust the lift of the rear axle for an extra-mean look! Remove the roof panel or open the doors and you have access to the detailed interior with handsome seats, radio, working steering and a mid-console gearshift. Store items in the trunk or lift the hood to reveal a detailed big block 390 V8 engine with battery, hoses and air filter detailing.

8. LEGO DC Super Heroes: App-Controlled Batmobile (76112)

Who could resist a Batmobile? It’s a lot of fun to drive around the house, and we’ve found it’s pretty sturdy too! It features 2 motors powered by a Bluetooth-controlled battery hub, an opening minifigure cockpit, 4-wheel drive and 2 dual stud shooters. Simply download the app to control the vehicle from your smartphone or tablet. This set also includes a Batman minifigure.

9. LEGO Creator Expert: Winter Village Fire Station (10263)

Build your very own winter village with all the holiday trimmings to feel the festive spirit this December. This delightful LEGO set features a double story, holly-adorned building with an upper-level kitchen, complete with a red telephone, table, fold-down bed and a LEGO light brick. Behind the large red fire station doors, you’ll discover firefighting equipment and a fire pole, while outside there’s an ice rink with a decorative firefighter statue, a decorated Christmas tree with transparent star and gifts, plus a bench and lamppost. This set also features a classic red fire truck with a turntable ladder, hoses, toolbox and deep-tread tires. Gather the family and bring the magic of the holiday season to your home with this festive LEGO Creator Expert set.

10. LEGO Creator 3-in-1: The Pirate Roller Coaster (31084)

The reason is simple, really: Roller coasters are always great fun! This amazing set features a functional roller coaster with pirate-themed props, including a sunken galleon, skull archway, palm tree and an octopus. The working carriages are shark-themed and the ride’s main drop has a water splash feature and a cannon that fires water elements. Other features include a ticket booth and a balloon stand. This set can be rebuilt for further LEGO fairground adventures aboard The Skull Ride or The Ship Ride, and comes with 4 minifigures ready for the fun of the fairground, plus a skeleton figure too.

11. LEGO City: Ocean Exploration Ship (60266)

Yes, it floats! We really love the amazing detail on this one. It has everything you need for endless ocean exploration. There’s a shark cage, working crane, research submarine, helicopter and even a pirate shipwreck with hidden treasure! And with 8 explorer minifigures, including LEGO City TV character Harl Hubbs, the scene is set for action-packed escapades.

12. THE LEGO MOVIE 2: Queen Watevra’s Build Whatever Box (70825)

Throw out the instruction manuals and get extra creative with this colourful and fun set of bricks from the THE LEGO MOVIE 2. If you’d like, go ahead and build and rebuild THE LEGO MOVIE 2 character Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi in 15 different forms too. This versatile and creative set has instructions to build each version of the shapeshifting queen, from a grumpy volcano to a happy butterfly or colorful rocket. It also comes with inspirational ideas for young master builders to create their own shapes.

13. LEGO Harry Potter: Hogwarts Astronomy Tower (75969)

This one comes highly recommended to be built alongside a holiday Harry Potter film marathon! You can expect turrets with iconic locations, cool characters and authentic detail from the Harry Potter movies. It also gives you the freedom to explore the many fascinating rooms of a magical castle with Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Horace Slughorn, Luna Lovegood, Neville Longbottom, Ron Weasley, Lavender Brown, Draco Malfoy and Hedwig. With so many familiar places and popular characters, you can all relive scenes and stories from movies together, including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and conjure up endless adventures of their own.

14. LEGO Jurassic Park: T. rex Rampage (75936)

Play the films in the background while building this awesome advanced set for extra thrills. After all, the T. rex is the coolest dino in the world! But get ready for a real challenge, as this collectible set contains 3120 pieces and features the original Jurassic Park’s iconic gate and a large, fully posable, brick-built T. rex dinosaur which is ideal for display. The trigger-activated gate is framed by a wall incorporating 7 detailed, brick-built scenes inspired by the movie, such as John Hammond’s dining room, Ray Arnold’s control room and a bunker for Ian Malcolm. A must-have for Jurassic Park fans, this set includes 6 minifigures and baby dinosaur figure, plus a minifigure display stand with T. rex facts.

15. LEGO Star Wars: The Child (75318)

This list wouldn’t be complete without a LEGO Star Wars set! And what could be more appropriate than building The Child right now? Authentic details of this popular character, affectionately known as Baby Yoda, are recreated in LEGO style, with posable head, ears and mouth for different expressions, plus the Child’s favorite toy – a gearshift knob (element included) – for it to hold just like it does in the show, Star Wars: The Mandalorian.

So many wonderful LEGO sets to build! We’d love to hear what sets you and your family plan to build these holidays.
